Differentiate
As a teacher, once you articulate what you want students to know, understand, and do and have created clear expectations through Scales and Targets the hard work begins. No Unit or teaching year is the same because no class is the same. Each class is made up of unique students with strengths and weaknesses. It is my job as a teacher to get to know these students and accommodate them and motivate them as they move through my class/curriculum. If this means re-evaluating my lesson plans then that is what I need to do.
One of the most important parts of this section involves a continuous loop of practice and feedback. Students can’t improve if they are not receiving constant and timely feedback from their instructor. Formative assessments give teachers the information that they need so that they know where their students’ level of understanding is. By giving many opportunities to practice and receive help with the targets along the way, the teacher gives the students useful feedback so that when the summative comes they will be ready.
During my first few months of school I have worked with students doing Thesis Statement Practice. After the first practice I gave feedback and formed different groups based on readiness, this allowed me to target specific issues and let all students improve.
